Time Will Tell

Cartier Vintage, a curation of selected timepieces by Cartier, are for purveyors of charm and timeless designs

- By Katherine Arteche

There are many reasons why Cartier is famous. Some people will tell you it’s because they make some of the best jewelry of all time.Others will claim it’s because of the celebrity association, while some will say that Cartier has been around for so long,it would be ridiculous to find someone who has no idea what the brand is.It is fitting to say that Cartier is all of those things and more, and truth be told,I’ve never come across anyone who didn’t admire the brand—and I don’t think I will.

Because of the maison’s extensive history, there are a multitude of stories to tell with each creation they introduce. The Cartier archives could very well be a national treasure, for almost every new product launch draws its inspiration from an old sketch, lost watch,a scribble from Louis Cartier’s notes,or a photograph. The strong historic foundation attributes to the timelessness of Cartier’s pieces, leaving those in pursuit of it to covet a story more than a mere timepiece.

Hence, the maison has curated Cartier Vintage,an assortment of Cartier’s timepieces dating from the 1970s to the 2010s.Having unveiled its showcase in London and Paris, the flagship boutique in ION Orchard Singapore houses six vintage timepieces from various collections.Such pieces include the Square Incurvée from Collection Louis Cartier,a cushion-shaped watch that’s reminiscent of the Art Deco era;a 1985Tonneau from when a part of the Swiss manufacture moved to Paris, resulting in“Cartier Paris”—stamped dials produced by the Manufacture Cartier Horlogerie Paris;and a Pasha de Cartier golf watch, specifically from the High Complication collection where each watch was exclusively made from one gold ingot, and thereafter individually numbered.

As to whom or what formed Cartier Vintage,it’s the experts from the Image,Style & Patrimony department who claim this credit.Upon acquiring the chosen timepieces, the authentication and restoration processes that follow are closely monitored, with the aid of trusted partners, specialists, and an in-house team to present them in certified, working condition. “We are pleased to have the opportunity to present these emblematic, mythical, and rare Cartier timepieces in Singapore,”says Anne Yitzhakov,Managing Director of Singapore and Malaysia.“As one of the few markets to provide this gesture,we believe that the permanent Cartier Vintage offering will be a new and wonderful experience for our watchmaking connoisseurs.”
