IT TAKES A VILLAGE
Y exposure to the world of confinement care in the past two months has been off the charts.
MA friend recently gave birth to a baby girl and a group of friends and I visited her a week later. Naturally, we were greeted by a confinement nanny cradling the new bundle of joy. Another friend, who is Dutch, was a bit perplexed by the entire set-up and needed a crash course on confinement care (not surprising, as the whole concept of postnatal confinement is deeply rooted in Asian culture). We gave her a fairly general overview, comprised of myths, as well as the do’s and don’ts, and it’s safe to assume that she might be on board with the overall concept.
Another instance was through a media visit to KAI Suites at Dunearn Road, which is Singapore’s first dedicated confinement facility. Not only does it offer specialized pre- and post-postpartum holistic care, it also boasts the luxury and convenience one expects from a boutique hotel.
What started off as an informative tour and tasting session of KAI Suites’ F&B offerings (one of the main highlights for the checked-in mums), became an impromptu Q&A session with founder Kevin Kwee, who graciously joined us for lunch despite his busy schedule, to tell us why he set up KAI Suites — and why now.
I realized that this lunchtime conversation was too good not to share with our readers, which is why we’re proud to present Kevin as this issue’s lead profile. This opportunity not only allowed him to wax lyrical on the future of such a revered tradition, it also gives us the chance to further recognize the miracle of childbirth and resilience of mothers.
