GOING ONCE, GOING TWICE…
Upcoming auction news and spectacular jewellery that has been sold at incredible prices.
SOTHEBY’S HONG KONG
Two ultra-rare bangles stole the show at the Sotheby’s Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels sale earlier in April. The first was a Cartier diamond and rock crystal bracelet – combining the maison’s legendary artistry and craftsmanship – with an impeccable 63.66-carat pear-shaped internally flawless white diamond, which sold for US$6,036,350 (S$8,055,056). Described as a “true treasure of nature”, a jadeite bangle weighing 277.673 carats achieved US$3,917,830. Exhibiting a subtle range of green to vivid green hues, the exquisite piece is characteristic of the finest green jadeite-jade from Burma.
DREWEATTS
A private collection of jewels by German goldsmith company Hemmerle will be auctioned by Dreweatts in the Fine Jewellery, Silver, Watches and Objects of Vertu sale on July 7. Founded in 1893 and originally a specialist in medals and orders, the house serves royalty, celebrities and even the Vatican. Wellknown for combining gemstones with uncommon materials, such as brass, steel, copper and wood, the brand is also reputed for its innovative techniques, particularly the use of oxidation and non-traditional finishes that are contrasted with traditional craftsmanship. The result: one-of-a-kind pieces that make Hemmerle jewels so current and covetable. Among the highlights on offer are an unusual green tourmaline-set watch, a pair of colour-change agate ear clips, and an 18k gold and oxidised iron green tourmaline ring.
