George Cleverley

-

In operation for six decades, renowned British bespoke and ready-to-wear shoemaker George Cleverley has maintained a strong presence in Asia for more than half its existence. CEO George Glasgow Jr says: “I think British brands appeal so strongly to the Asian market because of the history and heritage in craftsmanship and style that they possess. British brands are known for making things by hand and perfecting the process and product over many generations.”

The second generation to helm the business, Glasgow’s father George Snr is the company’s coproprietor and a master shoemaker trained by eponymous founder, George Cleverley. Glasgow says customers in Asia appreciate the fact that, along with a senior member of the shoemaking workshop, either he or his dad will always be present at bespoke trunk shows. “It allows us to build a very close relationship with our customers. They value knowing we’re a family-owned and operated business, handcrafting authentic, 100 per cent English-made products, exactly the same way it was done 50 years ago.”

Glasgow says: “We’ve been coming to Singapore for almost a decade now and currently hold trunk shows with Colony Clothing twice a year.” He praises the taste of the local clientele. “We find our Singaporean customers incredibly discerning and knowledgeable – true luxury connoisseurs and bon vivants – with a great appreciation for exotic hides
