Adventure And Inspiration
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is most famous for being the creator of Sherlock Holmes, but the Montblanc Writers Edition Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Limited Edition 8 fountain pen (S$239,000) honours the author from a different direction. It has an icy motif with solid white gold icebergs wreathing barrel and cap, along with translucent blue lacquer that takes after Arctic waters, which references Sir Arthur’s early life of adventure – he was offered the post of ship’s surgeon on a whaling vessel at just 20 years old. The cap is engraved with the phrase ‘I came of age at 80° north latitude’, taken verbatim from Sir Arthur’s diary entry on his 21st birthday. Other nods to his illustrious career include a moveable magnifying glass clip and engravings that reference The Captain of the Pole Star, one of Sir Arthur’s early nonHolmes short stories. The solid white gold nib features an engraving of Sir Arthur’s likeness, as well as that of a ship’s mast.
