To Infinity And Beyond
The construction of the world’s largest museum dedicated to astronomy in Shanghai has just reached its completion. Designed by New York studio Ennead Architects, the architectural marvel was built to reflect the geometry and shapes within the universe; one will easily notice that the form of the museum doesn’t bear any straight lines or right angles. This palpable design cue is meant to embody, in abstract form, the fundamental laws of astrophysics. Within the museum’s cantilevered volume is a circular opening called The Oculus, an architectural symbol that beautifully portrays the passing of time. On the summer solstice, at midday, an entire circle will be projected on a black platform constructed within the plaza.
