Unleash The Beast
The theme for Diageo’s 2021 Special Releases is that of mythical creatures that watch over the land. There are eight expressions in total and the oldest is the Lagavulin 26-year-old. Nicknamed The Lion’s
Jewel, the legend behind this release is a precious red gem that was guarded by the king of Islay. Bottled at 44.2 per cent ABV, the spirit within is a result of Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso first-fill casks. It bears all of Lagavulin’s rich, rounded smokiness on the nose and palate, and is remarkably viscous on the palate. Caramelised fruits are accompanied by a hint of salt and that classic herbaceous Islay bite, before giving way to a surprisingly delicate but lingering finish.
