Gorgosaurus skeleton
Auctioned by Sotheby’s in New York for US$6.1 million
Towering over other lots at Sotheby’s Natural History auction, this Gorgosaurus skeleton – which measures nearly three metres tall and eight metres long – became one of the most valuable dinosaurs sold at auction, setting a new record for a Gorgosaurus. The skeleton dates back to approximately 77 million years ago. It is one of just 20 known to exist and is the first of its kind to appear on an auction block. Discovered in 2018 around the Judith River Formation near Havre, Montana, it is one of a tiny handful that have been found in the US.
