Constructing and maintaining an eco-friendly home is not difficult, says architect and Generation T 2017 lister Tan Szue Hann, who is head of sustainability at Surbana Jurong

ith 2018 being the year of climate action in Singapore, it’s high time we begin to think about how we can live more sustainably, and reduce our impact on the natural environment. Just as charity begins at home, so does living sustainably. Here are a few tips on designing your home with eco-friendly and green principles in mind. heat. For the walls, choose a material that’s sufficiently insulating. Concrete and brick are generally good insulators of heat, and the higher the extent of walls facing the east and the west, the cooler your home tends to be. It’s also advisable to use construction materials that are biodegradable or recyclable, as this will not only contribute to a higher Green Mark (Singapore’s green building rating tool) rating, but also reduce the impact of production and wastage on the environment.
