When you think of Thai cuisine, one tends to think of spicy food and strong lemongrass and kaffir lime flavours. At Thanying, however the spice notes are milder and balance perfectly with sweet, salty and sour combinations—with coriander leaves the dominating aromatic herb. The menu is extensive, so ask the waitstaff for help in editing your selection so you can relish the all-time favourites. One such dish is the tom yam gai, a flavourful and comforting soup sans the sinus-clearing heat. Poo ja is also a scene stealer; the fried appetiser comprises flakes of crabmeat in a shell mixed with minced chicken and salted egg yolk, all covered in batter and deep fried. The refreshing yam som oh is a beautiful pomelo salad laid in a bed of crunchy lettuce with a carrot flower— the roasted coconut crunch and coconut cream make it extra-special.
