MAKE EVERY MEAL COUNT
How we can all play a part to minimise food waste and consume more sustainably
1 BE A SELECTIVE GOURMAND
With 14.5 per cent of the global greenhouse gas emissions produced by livestock, cutting down on mass-produced meats from factory farming not only reduces the demand, but also steers the agriculture industry to raise more animals on a pasture, which is kinder to the environment.
2 START THEM YOUNG
More than 150 schools in Singapore organise foodwaste reduction activities, so it’s not too early to educate the youth of today about protecting their future.
3 BE THE CHANGE
Only one in five individuals in Singapore is a smart consumer who is actively commited to reducing food waste. Contribute positively to that statistic by planning ahead of your grocery trips. And don’t be swayed by the promotional offers to buy unnecessary food items—such as the extra bag of tomatoes you’re going to forget about.
4 TIFFIN CARRIERS: THE NEW SMART BOXES
We produce at least 400 million tons of plastic each year. Recent studies also show that we could be ingesting some 5g of microscopic plastic every week—found primarily in bottled water, shellfish, beer and salt—so every effort you make to eliminate single-use plastics in your daily routine counts.
5 DON’T BE GREEDY
At least 85 per cent of Singapore residents eat out every week, so ordering in moderation instead of on impulse is key. Remember that only 17 per cent of food waste in Singapore is recycled; the rest is disposed at the waste-to-energy plants for incineration.
