The narrow stairwell going up the pretty heritage shophouse opens up to this gem of a restaurant. Delightful surprises await. The recommende­d braised and fried tripes dish is lovingly prepared and served with caviar in a Noilly-prat sauce. The offering is amazingly tender and steeped in rich, robust flavours.

Next, the coconut and lobster bisque with lobster chunks and dumplings has diners mopping up every last drop. For mains, the dramatic potau-feu or traditiona­l beef stew is an attention grabber. Rich stock with herbs and spices bubbles theatrical­ly. This aromatic soup is first served with moreish beef dumplings, and then in a separate dish as a beef and vegetable stew. A truly hearty and memorable meal for two. For dessert, the restaurant’s light, flaky mille feuille with bergamot and early grey-infused cream is the perfectly light ending to a rich and satisfying meal.
