Authenticity is a key component in this restaurant’s make-up, being able to boast a chef (still at the helm after 17 years) who used to cook for Thai royalty. For appetisers, the must tries are the crispy rice crackers (served with minced chicken and prawn in coconut milk), and the deepfried seasoned beef. Both are utterly delicious. Whether you opt for the green or red curry, the composition is always on point and unlike many Thai establishments, the central ingredients (be they chicken, prawn, beef or duck) are perfect, and never overcooked. Sabai Fine Thai prides itself on its massaman curries and they are rich in taste and texturally creamy with a delightful savoury sweetness. Also recommended is the steamed sea bass (bird’s eye chilli, garlic, lime juice). Despite the small wine list, each item has been carefully selected to complement Thai food, and the three on offer by the glass are well above average for a ‘house pour’. The service is friendly and top notch while the ambience is as tranquil and relaxed as it’s ever going to get in the CBD.
