Through The Kaleidoscope

CREATED IN COLLABORATION WITH LOCAL ARCHITECTURE FIRM WOHA, THE CORAK COLLECTION BY THE RUG MAKER CELEBRATES ASIAN TEXTILE TRADITIONS AND THE REGION’S NATURAL BEAUTY

-

Bring a touch of Asian design into your home with the Corak collection by The Rug Maker. Created together with architecture firm WOHA as part of its lifestyle brand Wohabeing, these rugs pay homage to the unique textile traditions of Asia as well as the region’s enchanting beaches and greenery. Designed by WOHA director Richard Hassell, the tessellating designs are what we might see if we were to look at a batik print through a kaleidoscope—a familiar pattern that’s been given a modern twist.

COLOURFUL TEXTURES

The rugs were first conceptualised through a combination of sketches and digital drawings. After which skilled artisans experiment using various techniques in a range of yarns and colours until the final designs are ready to be transferred onto a canvas. This is when the rug is made, one tuft at a time, created by hand to make the tactile, threedimensional surface. Each handtufted carpet in the collection has also been signed and numbered, with only 15 pieces available per design, so you’ll be owning a limited edition piece that’s akin to a work of art.

CLOSE TO HOME

The collection comprises five rug designs, each representing a slice of Asian heritage and nature-inspired motifs. Take for instance the Rimba rug, which draws cues from the forests of Bintan through earthy tones and shades of green. The Ulu rug was inspired by the bead-like details of traditional textiles, while the design of the Lautan rug was inspired by rippling waves of the Uluwatu sea. These creative references make the rugs more than just snug pieces that you can lay beneath your feet—they’re also meaningful ways of celebrating Asian design and craftsmanship within your abode.
