AS EVERY HOMEOWNER KNOWS, TURNING A MADE FOR YOU

The award-winning studio DESIGN INTERVENTION takes a bold and bespoke approach to stylish interiors using colours, patterns and textures

house into a home isn’t as simple as filling rooms with designer furniture. It takes a disciplined design eye to create living spaces that are not only comfortable and appealing, but also exude a strong sense of character, making the home feel distinctly yours. Seeking that unique quality, many local homeowners turn to the talents of award-winning studio Design Intervention. “We are very proud of the fact that we do not have a house style,” says Nikki Hunt, founder and principal of Design Inter vention. “Instead, we treat each project as unique.” Each Design Inter vention project begins by gathering insight into their clients, from their daily routines to their passions and tastes. As Hunt explains: “We ask quite personal questions: ‘Do you read in bed? How of ten do you bathe rather than shower? Where do you apply makeup?’ Understanding how a family lives is paramount to creating an environment that flows seamlessly and works best for their lifestyle.” While the resulting spaces are a unique reflection of the clients, homes designed by Design Intervention share a spirit of boldness and confidence, as illustrated in recurring themes from recent projects that have become the firm’s design signatures.

Harmonious Mix

With a reputation for using colours and patterns in daring combinations, the studio has mastered the mix-and-match approach to transform lacklustre spaces into lively, eclectic rooms bursting with personality. For the vibrant hues of an Orchard Road penthouse, Design Intervention took inspiration from the sunset sky, echoing the residence’s enviable views. The charming and whimsical space—awash in Wes Anderson shades of blue, pink and yellow—is anchored by a swing sofa bearing an eye-catching print and a pair of chevron armchairs. Even when working within a limited colour palette, Design Inter vention invigorates a space by expertly mingling multiple patterns. In one client ’s living space, the birch tree printed wallpaper from Cole & Son serves as the backdrop for a geometric patterned rug and cushions. A restricted colour scheme of black, white, and beige keeps the look unified, while solid black lampshades lend an air of glamour and grandeur.

Eastern Charm

Design Inter vention is often influenced by the culture of its home base, reinterpreting Asian motifs to ground their projects in a sense of place. Dubbed the Modern Chinoiserie House, this award-winning project is a perfect example of the studio’s penchant for crafting contemporary spaces using traditional Chinese and Asian elements. Taking cues from the client’s art and antiques collection, Design Inter vention peppered the home with customised Asian-inspired furniture. In the foyer, a round table with Chinese motifs in metal is a modern contrast to a pair of antique wood-carved armchairs. Prints with Eastern aesthetics such as a botanical print sofa and wallpaper bearing a phoenix pattern, also give the home a touch of stylish heritage.

Couture Touch

Hunt is particularly proud of the firm’s bespoke approach to each project, often incorporating personalised motifs and custom-made furniture pieces to create a truly one-of-akind home. “We craft couture interiors for an elite clientele,” she explains. “We design individual pieces that add a unique signature to a room. All our designs are made in Singapore, which means that our team can control and tweak the designs as they are fabricated.” Whether it ’s basing a room’s colour scheme on the client ’s favourite painting or designing a bespoke area rug with a meaningful pattern, Design Inter vention aims to tell a stor y through every design element. It’s this thoughtfulness in individual details that may just be the secret behind the firm’s immense success. “Our projects are as diverse as the clients we ser ve,” says Hunt, “but there is always a meticulous attention to the minutiae to achieve the home of their dreams.”
