As both a private and functional space, the bathroom serves as a personal sanctuary. “In today’s interiors, bathrooms are regarded as luxurious retreats and spaces for relaxation,” says Nikki Hunt, principal of Design Intervention. She observes that more homeowners are allocating larger floor areas to bathroom. In the firm’s recent projects, underutilised spaces such as the guest bedroom or study have become transformed into a new bathroom for the home. Invest in the design of your bathroom to make it a cohesive part of your interior; furnish it with as much attention as the rest of your home. “Feature lighting, architectural mouldings, as well as loose furniture, audio equipment, wallpaper and artworks are elements that we add to make bathrooms statement-making spaces,” says Hunt. Nature-derived elements are another way to add to the calming environment in your bathroom. “The most beautiful bathrooms let you bathe and shower close to nature, such as in beach resorts,” says Robert Cheng, founder of Brewin Design Office. To emulate the effect of a resort-style bathroom, he recommends maximising the amount of natural light and to have picture windows (if the space permits) that look out to scenic surroundings, which you can admire while soaking in the bathtub. Even a petite bathroom can have plenty of design potential. “Install a full-length mirror on one wall that reflects the other three walls, or have two full-height mirrors on opposing walls,” suggests Cheng. “This adds visual interest and creates a playful detail in the design.” Here are some key pieces to get you started on crafting your dream bathroom.
