NATURAL CALLING Indigenous to the Caribbean and South America, the beauty of the Chimarrhis turbinata tree features side branches that radiate outwards, not unlike the spokes of a bicycle wheel. Its striking appearance is celebrated in the Turbinata pedestal table from Roche Bobois, which uses solid Chimarrhis turbianata wood as its base; it’s paired with a glass tabletop that showcases its organic shape. Available at Roche Bobois; roche-bobois.com RUSTIC ORIGINS Amsterdam-based firm Barn in the City gives reclaimed barn wood a new purpose by creating furniture and decorative elements that allow the unique knots, grooves, cracks and patina of each log to shine. Recent creations include the Amber table (above), which features the “iced” barn wood treatment—a semi-transparent coating creates a frosted look that also makes the wood scratch-resistant. Available at Tatum Singapore; tatumcompany.com SCULPTURAL ART The Split collection by Seoulbased designer Shon Shin Kyu combines Korean pinewood with polished stainless steel to create a pair of sculptural furniture pieces akin to works of art. The bench features a rectangular sheet that is sliced through a wooden log and is balanced on five sheets of stainless steel; the bookshelf, on the other hand, features a 2.1m-tall tree log that cuts through a seven-tiered shelf. Available at The Artling; theartling.com
