All That Jazz

The elegant composition of this apartment by Designworx Interior Consultant struck a chord with its music-loving owners

A close working relationship is the foundation that underpins every successful design project, and a credo that steers Designworx Interior Consultant’s various undertakings. The interior design firm holds regular discussions with clients to understand their space requirements and psyche, translating their personalities into homes that represent their owners to a T.

This 1,981sqft apartment in Wallich Residence, a luxury condominium in Tanjong Pagar, is no different. Home to a jazz-loving couple and their family, the modern abode is understated yet luxurious, boasting tasteful touches that harken to the golden era of the musical genre and a palpable ambience that helps its owners unwind surrounded by the things they love.

SETTING THE TONE

“We took inspiration from

Rhapsody in Blue, the famous jazz composition by George Gershwin,” says Terri Tan, design director at Designworx Interior Consultant. As a result, the home’s furniture, lighting, decorative accents, fabrics and leathers convey a sense of glamour ref lective of the Jazz Age.

Stepping into the light-filled living room with its mix of colours, angles and silhouettes brings one back to the classical aesthetic of America in the 1920s. Rondo sectional sofas from Rolf Benz border an art deco-inf luenced Adnet coffee table, which charms with its curved metal legs, brass rings and fine leather detailing. The owner’s golden saxophone and a Bea armchair from Porada form a counterpoint to the

L-shaped arrangement of the sofas. These pieces stand on a bespoke rug sporting geometric motifs in a calming azure shade.

Storage and display options are afforded by the Urban wall system from Misuraemme, while sliding glass panels conceal the TV when it is not in use. The living area also features a substantial column that Designworx Interior Consultant viewed as a decor opportunity rather than a space-planning challenge. Instead of concealing it with architectural millwork, the agency gave it pride of place and a new look with full scalloped panelling and decorative uplights.

KEEPING THE BEAT

The living room’s aura segues seamlessly into the dining space, with furnishings in similar colours and finishes. Here, a glass-topped In the Clear table by Caracole holds court; the statement piece is supported by dual geometric-inspired metal bases with oakwood inserts.

The dining table is f lanked by eight leather-clad Maryl chairs from Airnova. A selection of bespoke blue placemats, plates and gold cutlery ties the look together. Overhead, Multi

Lite brass pendant lamps from Gubi provide illumination.

Also lending visual interest to this space are a large artwork by Samuel Kane on a feature wall; in the background, the

Harrison mirror by British designer Kelly Hoppen adds a playful touch and draws the eye to the rest of the apartment.

CHASING THE BLUES

The home’s three bedrooms branch off an elongated corridor, which culminates in the master bedroom at the end. This striking blue corridor doubles as a gallery for the owners’ collection of Hermès scarves and art prints.

Of the three bedrooms, one offers a bird’s-eye view of Singapore’s southern region, complete with old shophouses nestled among modern skyscrapers. In this space, a bespoke bedframe is integrated with a dressing table, with both orientated to capitalise on views of the stunning vista.

The master bedroom was given a restrained palette; grey tone-ontone finishes are interspersed with touches of gold. A feature wall sports the same scalloped treatment as the living-room column; on it hangs a Hermès scarf depicting French artist Ugo Gattoni’s

Le Grand Prix du Faubourg print in black and white. A Roca bench by Kelly Hoppen stands at the foot of the bespoke super king-sized bed. Opposite, a petite dressing table and display shelves maximise use of the space. In the adjoining study, a blue leather daybed from Zanotta was included as a relaxing option that the owners could lounge on, as working from home becomes the norm.

Completed in January, the eight-week project hits all the right notes with the owners. “They love the contemporary yet relaxed feel of the interior, with its understated glamour, jazz accents and rich tapestry of materials, textures and colours,” says Tan.
