Winning Formula
Frequently named as one of the top firms, Design Intervention represents Singapore on the world stage
Founded in 2004, Design Intervention has consistently clinched numerous global accolades across diverse categories at the International Property Awards and the International Design & Architectural Awards. It was also among the 2020 list of nominees on Andrew Martin’s Interior Design Review, an annual book which recognises the world’s greatest interior designers. It’s the seventh consecutive year in which the Singapore-based firm has been on the list, a remarkable achievement for the local studio.
“These awards firmly establish that Singapore design is a force to be reckoned with. It is our honour and absolute delight to be representing Singapore on the global design stage,” says
Design Intervention founder Nikki Hunt, who helms with the firm with CO-CEO Andrea Savage.
“Our strength as a studio is our teamwork,” says Savage. “Every project is a collaborative effort, pooling the talents of our diverse team to produce our very best work for our clients. I am so very proud of our team.”
Here, we profile a few of the award-winning projects that have won the Singapore-based practice worldwide recognition.
INTERNATIONAL ACCLAIM
Design Intervention adopted a maximalist approach to a 1,300sqft London holiday apartment, an oustanding project that received the World’s Best Interior Design – Apartment accolade at the International Property Awards 2020-2021 and was also named the Best Residential Interior Apartment (London) at the UK Property Awards 2020.
The bold interior matches rococo-style elements with lively chinoiserie patterns; overhead, a pink ceiling with lace-like plasterwork communicates a quintessentially English vibe. “It is
a bright and vibrant home that feels cheerful even on the gloomiest of winter days,” says Hunt.
The Arthouse Penthouse is another remarkable project by the firm, and it won the World’s Best Interior Design – Private Residence at the International Property Awards 2019. This spectacular abode wields an understated design to great effect, letting the various objets d’art take centrestage.
In the living area, an expansive home bar casts a gentle glow that invites lounging. The homeowner’s eye-catching collection of knives resides in a customised glass showcase set between the dining room and home office.
HEIGHT OF STYLE
The jury of the International Property Awards were also suitably impressed with the firm’s Bangkok penthouse project, handing the firm the World’s Best Bathroom Design and the Best Bathroom Design (Thailand) honours in 2021 and 2020 respectively. At the heart of this 5,200sqft penthouse is an impressive bathroom—luxurious, tranquil and functional all at once. Built for a young bachelor, the firm gave this glamorous space a showstopping double-mirror marble vanity on a faceted pedestal, among other bespoke touches.
“He desired a refined bachelor pad with all the trappings of a modern-day, luxury Hollywood set,” says Savage. “He wanted a unique home with fine finishes but also one that complemented and enhanced the stunning vista.”
BLAZING A TRAIL
Demonstrating both the team’s versatility and knack for detail, a breathtaking bachelorette pad in Singapore is yet another awardwinning project. This private escape won the World’s Best Bathroom Design and World’s Best Kitchen Design accolades at the International Property Awards 2018.
“We are particularly proud of
the bespoke bathtub, vanity and shower benches that give a totally unique bathing experience,” says Hunt. “We also love how we have created a seamless aesthetic f low in both the bathroom and kitchen, while simultaneously integrating the practical requirements and maximising the available area.”
The curved wall in the kitchen adds to the home’s feminine appeal, while in the master bathroom, the shower walls are clad in a pearlescent finish; bespoke furnishings as well as gold trimmings add a dose of luxury throughout the home.
