Works of Art
This new monograph sheds light on the creative process of French design firm Liaigre
Since its founding by the late French designer Christian Liaigre in 1985, French design brand Liaigre has crafted a reputation for designing elegant interiors and furnishings with a minimalist and understated approach. The brand’s elegant savoir-faire is encapsulated in its new monograph, Liaigre Creation 2016 - 2020; the book is available to purchase at the Liaigre showroom in Singapore.
Penned by French art historian and journalist Françoise-claire Prodhon and published by Rizzoli, the book details five projects that were spearheaded by Christian Liaigre and completed under the supervision of his longtime collaborator and Liaigre’s current creative director, Frauke Meyer. The book also dedicates an entire chapter to behind-thescenes insights into the brand’s design process, while sharing more about the company’s headquarters in Paris, which it dubs its “creative laboratory”.
“From all these years spent working alongside Christian Liaigre, one obvious fact stands out: a designer has to learn how to
see, never stopping at their initial convictions, and to ceaselessly search, through instinct and ref lection, for the defining aspect of each project,” says Frauke Meyer, commenting on the home projects realised by Studio Liaigre.
STYLE AND FUNCTION
The abodes featured in the book include a Japanese home that overlooks hot springs, a modern reinterpretation of a Bavarian-style mansion, a traditional Swiss villa in St. Moritz, the studio’s first project in India, as well as a charming historical home in Paris; pictured on this spread, the latter is among the stunning highlights of the tome.
Designed for an art-loving couple, this dream Parisian abode needed sufficient storage for its owners’ extensive art collection. The team embraced the home’s historic bones and took decor cues from its 1930s architectural elements as well as the couple’s treasured African and Oceanian art and sculptures.
With a meticulous attention to detail, Liaigre created restful spaces and various inspiring vignettes throughout the historic abode.
A spiral staircase with marble steps instantly catches the eye, its sculptural form matched with copper mesh panels and a stained walnut handrail.
Several wood varieties are featured in the house to complement its handsome duotone look. These range from the smoked oak cladding of the staircase to the brushed and stained spruce and cedar pieces in the master suite on the second f loor; they contribute to the modern look of the home and form the perfect backdrop for the works of art displayed throughout the abode.
The bright walk-in wardrobe is a peaceful sanctuary for the homeowners to leisurely ponder over their apparel selection, while the indoor pool serves as a cooling refuge for the family to soak off the day’s stress. The overall effect is a sanctuary that exudes modern elegance within its historical context.
