A New Narrative
2nd Edition drew inspiration from Singapore’s vibrant history to design a series of showflats for the LIV @ MB condominium
With their colourful shophouses and eclectic mix of restaurants and boutiques, the dynamic enclaves of Joo Chiat, Katong and Marine Parade in Singapore’s East Coast are sought after for their lively air and proximity to the sea. Naturally, these atmospheric neighbourhoods became a starting point for local design firm 2nd Edition when it was commissioned to design the show apartments of upcoming luxury condominium LIV @ MB, located at the site of the former Katong Park Towers development.
“The client wanted the design to embrace the theme of ‘past, present, future’ for the show units by incorporating the historical and cultural highlights of eastern Singapore with a modern twist,” says design director Hilary Loh.
For the project, Loh and design associate Yang J-lyn conceptualised four units, ranging from one to four bedrooms. For the oneand two-bedroom apartments, the duo focused on creating functional and efficient dwellings even within a limited floor space. When crafting the larger three- and four-bedroom show units, 2nd Edition drew inspiration from travel and the country’s multicultural heritage to create luxurious piedsà-terre that would serve as holiday

homes for overseas buyers and modern families.
The three-bedroom unit, which features a tropical colour palette that combines verdant accents with warm, earthy tones, is styled with a fusion of European and Asian elements for a well-travelled family. For instance, in the living room, rattan furnishings are juxtaposed with sleek designer light fixtures and quirky jungle print wallpaper and upholstery to create a vibrant interior space with a dose of whimsy. Loh says: “The interior is modern and eclectic with a twist of whimsical fun in the wallpaper and furniture, and reflects a love of collecting bespoke pieces.”
For the four-bedroom unit, the team devised a modern interpretation of the splendour of colonial-era bungalows by the sea. To evoke the stately ambience of such homes, the windows in the living room feature sheer blinds that allow dappled sunlight to filter in. Key furnishings such as the eight-seater dining table are placed directly on the balcony to capitalise on the gentle sea breezes while dining. Even the sofa set is
strategically positioned to enable unobstructed views of the ocean.
Complementing the plush fabrics in soothing grey tones are metal accents such as silver leafeffect wallpaper and highlights in gold. “These accents shine in an understated manner without fighting for attention,” elaborates Loh. “These examples of fine workmanship and the use of custom-made furniture specially designed to better integrate into the space highlight the luxury and exclusivity of the property.”
All in, when viewed together, the show units not only convey the uniqueness of the development and its potential for catering to a wide range of lifestyles, but also offer an insight into how history and heritage remain relevant in evoking a sense of place in a modern world. Loh concludes: “The apartments unite the history and culture of Singapore with a modern, vibrant lifestyle that future homeowners will take pride and joy in.”
