Lamborghini didn’t starting from scratch when it started conceptualising the Urus. It had references to look at—two to be exact. One was its first SUV prototype, an off-road military vehicle called Cheetah that it unveiled at the 1977 Geneva Auto Show in hopes of securing an order with the US Army. The car sported a rear-mounted 5.9L Chrysler 360 V8 engine that produced 183hp, butŠfailed to seal the deal. The marque’s SUV dreams never died, and it unveiled two more off-road prototypes—the LM001 in 1981 and the LMA002 the next year— before finally revealing the LM002 (pictured) in 1986. It would be made into a total of 328 units. The now-famous car had a V12 engine from the Lamborghini Countach sports car, which made it one of the most powerful vehicles of its time, and was nicknamed “RamboŠlambo”. It would also come to greatly inspire the conceptualisation of the Urus, which is continuing its legacy as a formidable powerhouse SUV.
