Editor’s Note
In what feels like a blink of an eye, here we are: at the beginning of a brand-new decade. There’s nothing like a fresh start to inspire hope—a transition that poet and publisher
T S Eliot put so eloquently when he said, “For last year’s words belong to last year’s language. And next year’s words await another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning.”
The top of each year is a chance to start anew and like me, I’m sure many of you have written down goals and resolutions to kick‑start 2020 in the right direction. However, in our quest to improve our lives and achieve that next milestone, we must not forget how important balance is in the equation.
Striking a balance is something that our cover personality Liv Lo, founder of fitness platform Fitsphere, takes to heart. By all accounts, the model-turned-entrepreneur leads an extremely busy life, especially with the whirlwind changes that comes with being Mrs Henry Golding. She works as a host, runs her own business, and travels between Asia and the US for various commitments. Despite this, health and well‑being remain her top priority. Read about her wellness journey on page 118.
It’s not only those with a hectic, jet‑setting lifestyle who feel overwhelmed. In 2019, the World Health Organisation named burnout as an actual occupational hazard—a sign of the extremely stressful times. In response, there’s an increasing supply and demand for products, places and initiatives that promote wellness and mindfulness—whether it’s the creation of a destination such as Sangha Retreat by Octave Institute in China (page 158); a new line of tea that restores qi (page 140); or spaces designed with sustainability and health in mind (page 146).
Ultimately, what we at Singapore Tatler are advocating for in this issue is to shift the focus on ourselves once in a while. Post that Instagram story later, reply to that e-mail tomorrow, and learn to live in the moment. And when you feel that the world is moving too fast, just breathe, sleep, and repeat.
