H IS FOR: HAW PAR VILLA

As a child, Sharon Yang fondly remembers her visits to Haw Par Villa. “My parents, who moved

here from China when I was two, are familiar with the myths and legends portrayed in the cultural park and would narrate the stories to me. One of my best memories was taking the boat ride, which passed through bizarrely fascinating scenes and ended with a slide and splash,” says the illustrator who has depicted a fairy goddess in her work. “The sculptures, with their wacky poses and pasty complexions, look more interesting and funnier every time. This is a park that has

been renovated so many times, but somehow it manages to look as though it is frozen in time.”
