Tatler Singapore

Alphabet City

K is for Keong Saik Road

Take a walk around Keong Saik Road and you will find charming wall murals that have come to define the area. For Liquan Liew and Estella Ng of art collective Ripple Root, the street is home to their first large-scale outdoor mural at 1 Keong Saik Road. “Keong Saik is the perfect mix of old meets new, with architectural elements that trace its origins from a red-light district, to the current [assemblage of] hip bars and restaurants—it speaks uniquely Singapore. Our mural has that spontaneity and fresh energy, while paying homage to history—and we are very proud whenever we see someone snapping a picture with it.”

Alphabet City is a series of 26 parts. Each month, Tatler invites an artist or collective to create a work that celebrates the best of Singapore, from A to Z
