20/20 Vision
Common wisdom holds that travel infinitely broadens the mind, and, dear reader, that is something that we at Tatler strongly espouse. With the lifting of travel restrictions in Singapore and to most countries in the world (at the time of writing, Japan has most excitingly committed to open its borders to international tourists this month), there’s no better time than the present to pick up your monogrammed passport holders, dust off your trusty Rimowa luggage and book a flight somewhere.
I, myself, have been taking full advantage of the newfound freedom to travel, most recently to the United States, where I hiked in one of the country’s most beautiful national parks—yosemite—and took in its expansive natural beauty. The breath-taking mountain vistas and dramatic waterfalls refreshed one’s mind and left me recharged, mentally and physically.
Early this June, I will also be heading to one of my favourite cities in the world, London, to take in American jeweller Tiffany & Co’s new exhibition, Vision & Virtuosity (p.98), which celebrates its legendary history and will display a dazzling array of jewels, artefacts and historically significant items from its archives.
Speaking of the UK, we have a Brit on our cover this month: Mandala Group’s Ben Jones (p.128), who is making waves in Singapore’s creative, culinary, hospitality and design scenes with his forward-looking approach to an age-old institution (read: a private members’ club that goes beyond just serving as a stuffy location for socialsing).
He proudly tells our Features Editor Coco Marett in his cover feature, “Mandala is a company that was born in Singapore—and which is proudly Singaporean. If someone wants to tap into the dynamic and exciting elements of arts and culture in this country, this is the place to do it.” As we find out in his cover interview, Jones is envisioning Mandala Club as a new kind of creative network across the globe, starting with Singapore as its springboard. He definitely has his work cut out for him, but from where we’re standing (right across the road, in fact), he seems to be doing a smashing job so far.
With so many of us in the Tatler community jetting off in the near future, my only hope is that all of you will inform your travels with the best that Tatler’s editors have curated—whether it is on our website, social media channels, or the print magazine that you now hold in your hands. Happy trails!
