She created this month’s Alphabet City feature
A local music movement popular in the 1980s, xinyao refers to a repertoire of Mandarin folk‑pop songs featuring coming of age musings created and performed by Singapore youths. For self‑taught illustrator Angeline Chia of Lil Teddy Studio, her memories of xinyao include Xiao Ren Wu De Xin Sheng (Voices from the Heart), sung by Wu Jiaming, and Xi Shui Chang Liu (Friendship Forever), composed by Liang Wern Fook. “I hope the spirit of xinyao lives on, encouraging young Singaporeans to candidly share about their lives,” says Chia. “Our vulnerabilities,
when expressed, help others understand what we’re going through and that we’re not that different.”
Alphabet City is a series of 26 parts. Each month, Tatler invites an artist or a collective
to create a work that celebrates the best of Singapore, from A to Z
