FAN OF THE BRAND: Cheng Chye Peng, area manager, oil and gas industry FAVOURITE NOVELTY: Quai de L’Ile in steel, $23,200
Even though Cheng Chye Peng’s favourite Vacheron Constantin in his collection is the brand’s classic round Traditionnelle Chronograph in white gold, he has a penchant for shaped watches. It is little surprise, therefore, that his favourite new timepiece by the manufacture is its cushion-shaped Quai de L’Ile, an automatic timepiece in steel with a blue dial (“my favourite colour”). He likes the watch’s unique take on the cushion case – the result of combining a round bezel with a tonneau caseband.
“A date window is too common,” says Cheng, who is attracted to details like the watch’s date ring. An indicator moves around this date disc to show each day’s date. As someone who enjoys unusual details, he would have liked the 12hour marker to be in a bold colour.
“Personally, I prefer it to be a bit smaller than 41mm – maybe 40mm or 39mm – so as to better fit my wrist.” Despite this, the Quai de L’Ile was love at first wear for him. “When I first wore this watch, I had the feeling you get when you are comfortable with someone you just met. And it’s suitable for most occasions, whether formal or casual.”
