BIG AND BOLD

FAN OF THE BRAND: Tan Sern En, manager

FAVOURITE NOVELTY: Excalibur Spider Pirelli Automatic Skeleton in titanium, $101,000

LARGER THAN LIFE

With their bold details, striking finishes and large sizes, Roger Dubuis watches are not for those who like to blend in. And that’s exactly how fans such as Tan Sern En like it. His favourite piece in his personal collection is the Hommage automatic in pink gold, featuring a dial with dramatic sunray engraving and outsized applied Roman numerals; classic in styling, but modern in its arresting boldness. His pick of the brand’s novelties for 2017 is sportier, but just as eye-catching.

FULL OF DRIVE

“Sporty and outstanding,” says Tan, when summing up the Excalibur Spider Pirelli Automatic Skeleton in black DLC-coated titanium with bright blue rubber accents. Its USP: A rubber strap made from racewinning Pirelli tyres. He adds: “I am a huge fan of motorsports and I like cars – which guy doesn’t?” While its large 45mm case and tyre-rubber strap do not sound like a recipe for superior wearability, Tan notes: “It’s actually quite light and is really comfortable. I’m a big guy, so I think its size is just right for me.”

THE NEW FORMAL

Some might think that dressy occasions call for a sleek, simple timepiece. Tan begs to differ. He says: “This watch could get me from a casual to a formal function.” In fact, there is only thing that he does not like about this watch. “I might not be able to get my hands on one, due its limited run of 88 pieces.”
