LET’S BE CLEAR

Transparency is the order of the day – at least where the latest designer styles are concerned.

-

The desire for greater transparency extends to fashion.

In this Vuca (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) world where everything seems questionable – from the number of followers an influencer has, to the veracity of the words coming out of the mouths of global leaders – there is one thing we all want: Transparency. For better or worse, fashion has responded to the challenge, resurrecting the transparent trend after something like two decades in dormancy. Hot off the press is Rimowa’s collaboration with luxury streetwear brand Off-White.

Part suitcase and part performance art, there is no better way to personalise your baggage than by having all your belongings on display. Incidentally, Off-White founder and creative director Virgil Abloh is also the artistic director of menswear at Louis Vuitton, so it comes as no surprise that the latest versions of Louis Vuitton’s iconic Keepall bag, which will be launched this month, are transparent with an iridescent finish. But we would advise drawing the line at accessories when it comes to the transparent trend – French fashion label Martin Margiela recently did a long-sleeved shirt that is wholly transparent, save for its opaque white seams. Some things, we think, are still better kept under wraps.
