Inline Skating

-

Just head down to the nearest park and you might see someone inline skating, but do you know about its history or how it became a popular sport? This sport can be exhilarating, but are you also aware of the safety measures to take? Read on to find out what makes it so superb!

WHAT IS INLINE SKATING?

This sport is different from quad skates or roller skates, which have two wheels in the front and two wheels at the back. Inline skates typically have two to four wheels arranged in a single line, and they have a rubber “brake” block attached to the rear of one of the skates. This allows the skater to slow down or stop, by leaning back on the foot with the brake.

SAFETY FIRST

As with all sports, we need to take extra care during inline skating too! Can you name some of the safety gear that is required for this sport? Inline skating injuries could happen when a skater loses balance and falls on a hard surface or when he or she collides with another skater, jogger, cyclist or pedestrian. That is why protective equipment is important to lessen your risk of getting seriously injured. The most commonly injured body parts are the hands and arms, although abrasions to other areas of the body are common.

Finally, you will need to ensure your skates and the brakes are working properly and you are dressed in the right sports attire. Remember to stay hydrated with plenty of water throughout your activity and make sure you stop to take a rest if you feel you need to.
