Junghans reinterprets its Meister Kalender in a moving tribute to all things Singapura

World of Watches (Singapore) - - Junghans Special -

While much of the SG50 mania has waned since last August, we can still appreciate the occasional reminder of how far our island nation has come since its independence 50 years ago. And we certainly aren’t too jaded either to raise our glasses to a tribute to our country, especially one that’s as attractive as this Junghans Meister Kalendar limited edition.

Here, Junghans has deftly rendered the moon phase display on the recessed date dial of its now iconic Meister Kalender in our national colours of white and red, which symbolise “pervading and everlasting purity and virtue” and “universal brotherhood and equality of man” respectively. The white moon, whether waxing or waning, is aptly accompanied by the five stars (representing democracy, peace, progress, justice, and equality) of the Singapore flag, further signalling the timepiece’s allegiance. Previewed towards the tail end of last year, this homage succinctly embodies the founding values of the constitution of Singapore.

Despite its patriotic inklings, much of the watch’s original DNA remains intact with its distinctive convex Plexiglass crystal and sunray-brushed dial in a handsome shade of anthracite grey. We’re sold at the sight of its stately aesthetics evoking nostalgia and understated sophistication in a classic dress watch that many will hold dear to their hearts. The application of an environmentally friendly compound on the hour and minute hands that ensure readability in the dark is also a nice touch.

The day and month apertures are retained and now provide a subtle contrast to the grey milieu. It has all the hallmarks of a classy horological evergreen: refined aesthetics with a traditional heartbeat courtesy of an exclusive Eta-manufactured self-winding J800.3 movement with a Dubois Dépraz moon phase module, a 40.4mm yellow gold PVD stainless steel case, and a black horse leather strap. It is limited to 28 pieces worldwide.

Most watch collectors will tell you that the best timepieces are those that connect with the wearer’s emotions. While one will be hard-pressed to argue with the precision and elegance of a Junghans timepiece, the watch’s sentimental value cannot be simply measured in monetary terms. And we love beautiful watches that tell a story and wear its heart on its sleeve. For Singaporeans looking to reward their offspring, look no further. What better way to mark the passing of time from one generation to the next with this unequivocally timeless endowment?
