The Cartier: Style And History exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris allowed visitors a peek into European high society of yore through its jewellery and artefacts

Every visit to Paris tells me I am walking into one big open-air museum. There are so many important museums and even more priceless works of art, which are testament to the richness of art history on show every day.

Since 1847, Cartier has been the name behind some of the world’s most beautiful jewellery and precious curios, which makes the curation of a historically significant exhibition all the more challenging.

Having a strong theme certainly helps with the task. The Cartier: Style And History exhibition, organised by the Réunion des musées nationaux — Grand Palais, narrowed things down to exhibits that shone against the broader backdrop of social development and change over more than a century in Europe.

The 600-plus exhibits included fine jewellery, mystery clocks, watches and other precious artefacts, some borrowed from private collectors. Also at the exhibition was a wealth of archive and other historical materials. The three main criteria used by Cartier’s Style, Image and Heritage team led by Pierre Rainero in selecting exhibits for the exhibition were distinctive style, creativity and source. The selected exhibits were then organised into eight sections.

It is worth mentioning that, from Europe to Asia, many stars and celebrities have established a unique and intimate relationship with Cartier. Luminaries such Elizabeth Taylor, Edward VI I I, Wallis Simpson, Kate Middleton and members of the Indian nobility have all had the pleasure of wearing Cartier jewellery or have had designs created for them. These personages have enriched the history of the brand in turn.

The exhibition at the Grand Palais attracted long lines every day. This is ZbBz’s selection of Cartier’s top 10 most iconic pieces from the exhibition.
