Golfers pitch perfectly in aid of Rubicon
Golfing enthusiasts took to the Matumi
Golf Club on Friday for the highly anticipated Rubicon Golf Day. This year’s edition saw an increase in the number of female team entrants at the time of teeing off.
Organiser and Rubicon general manager, Driekie Heiberg said, “Firstly, the Golf Day was a wonderful way for Rubicon Retirement Village residents to have a fun day out. We are a non-profit organisation and the overwhelming support and sponsorship of the business community makes a tremendous difference in a number of the projects we take on each year.”
The tournament used the “better ball” format, which allows team members to play their own balls. After each hole, the team compares scores and the lower score of the two is used as the team’s score.
The tournament commenced on a sunny Lowveld day and teams from as far afield as Middelburg soaked up the sun as they tried to outdo one another on the golf course.
The women’s teams did not disappoint and Mary-Anne Braithwaite, Barbara Scott, Lou Minnaar and Gale Scott put in notable performances. The winners in this category
were Braithwaite and Scott, with Minnaar and Smith taking second place.
In the men’s division, Dave Lowe and Cas du Toit avoided bogeying and getting stuck in the bunkers to claim top honours.
Biaton entered two teams and Heiberg said, “They were the evening’s worthy winners and provided the Fanie de Villiers cricket ball and All Black rugby jersey, which were a huge contribution to our fundraising efforts.”
She continued, “Rubicon residents and management would like to thank all the role players who make this annual event such a special one, particularly Dave Croxon, who organised the Golf Day.”
