A day of pure joy at i’langa

- Stefan de Villiers

MBOMBELA - Hearts were as full as tummies and smiles were as broad as Madiba’s shoulders when the i’langa Mall team decided to paint memories instead of walls on Mandela Day.

When thinking of making a difference in someone’s life, the first things that come to mind is often life’s necessities - food, shelter and water, to mention a few. Fun is rarely considered as a necessity, but judging from the reaction of 67 less privileged children who were treated to the sweetest, coolest party at The Ice Rink, there is no fear when you are having fun.

“We wanted to create an experience for children that will hopefully stay with them for the rest of their lives, and I think, based on the smiles and the feedback we received from the children, we managed to do just that,” said the mall’s marketing manager, Elmaré Gerber.

Among the children were seven from Huis Betlehem and 60 from neighbouring communities like Matsulu, Tekwane South, KaNyamazame and Pienaar.

Tenants jumped on board to spoil them with pizza, hamburgers, slush puppies and tables laden with all things sweet. Most of these children have never experienced ice skating, and might never again. “We were humbled by the smiles and laughter. While skating, one of the children commented to our operational manager, Fred Smith, that this was the best day ever,” said Gerber.

The staff from Doppio Zero also joined the party and assisted some of the youngsters. The Fun Company sponsored 67 minutes of free play to the 67 children where they enjoyed all the arcade games, bumper cars and XD-Rider.

Before their departure they were treated to some ice cream and received goodie bags filled with more treats and snacks to make the journey home a bit more pleasant.

“We are honoured to have hosted these children and to have been part of this beautiful moment in time. Nelson Mandela’s legacy continues to live on: Madiba Day and every day,” Gerber concluded.
