Thomas Ngomane makes music for broken-hearted people

- Masabatha Mnyambo

BARBERTON - Music is the universal language of mankind. You might not know the words to a song, but you can definitely dance along to the rhythm.

Thabiso Ngomane developed an interest in music at a young age. “I became interested in soul and gospel music when I was in grade one. I then started singing in churches,” he said.

Ngomane sites Ringo Madlingozi and Sfiso Ncwane as his inspirations. “I grew up listening to Madlingozi’s soulful melodies. I learned a lot about soul by listening to him. Ncwane was a powerful force in the gospel scene. He always aimed to make raw and authentic gospel music,” he said.

Ngomane followed his dreams and started making Afro-soul and gospel music. “In the Afro-soul genre, I make music for broken-hearted, depressed people who have lost all hope in life. In the gospel genre, I mainly create music that people can worship to and that will touch their lives,” he said.

He has performed at the music creative workshops at Mbombela Stadium and several restaurants and churches.

Ngomane told Lowvelder about the artists he would like to open for. “It would have to be Vusi Nova or Dumi Mkokstad. They are truly doing well for themselves, and I love their energy when they perform. They put their hearts and souls in it.”

He said he does not imagine himself doing anything other than music. “My entire life is music and I simply cannot picture myself without it.”

Ngomane said the Internet has been a great tool for independent artists like him. “We mainly use the Internet to advertise and for people to be able to download or watch our music. It really helps us to get more listeners.”

His efforts have not gone in vain as his latest single, “Uthando”, has been nominated for two awards. “I have been nominated for a Mzansi Arts and Media (MAMA) as well as a Golden Art and Media award. I am so excited that my music is finally being recognised and loved by many. I never thought my single would be nominated for any award. I am greatly humbled,” said Ngomane.

To vote for him in the MAMAs, SMS “MAMA 1464”, and to vote for him in the Gamas, SMS

“GAMA” to 1156. Voting closes on August 1.
