Malls feed the needy in KaBokweni

- Masabatha Mnyambo

KABOKWENI - The coronavirus is a pandemic like no other. Many have lost their source of income as certain service sectors and non-essential industries had to shut down.

To keep the fires burning during these difficult times and in celebrating the annual Mandela Day, KaBokweni and Emoyeni malls donated much needed food parcels to community members.

Shadrack Maswanganyi, Emoyeni’s centre manager said it is difficult knowing that people go to bed with empty stomachs. “Many people have been affected by the lockdown. Businesses had to close down, leading to a loss of jobs. This makes it impossible for people to feed their families as most of them live from hand to mouth.

“We normally celebrate Mandela Day by helping out at our local schools, but giving to the community made much more sense, considering that many residents are suffering,” he said

Maswanganyi, together with Tswelopele Funerals, provided 34 community members with food parcels and masks. The parcels contained two litres of cooking oil, three tins of baked beans, two tins of fish, four soup packets, mayonnaise and maize meal.

Athalia Masango, one of the recipients, said, “I am very thankful for what they have done for the community. We are all going through hard times, so for them to go out of their way to do this for us is selfless. May God continue to bless them,” she said.

Maswanganyi said they plan on giving out more food parcels to neighbouring communities.
