Church Unlimited’s production celebrates new beginnings
MBOMBELA - A unique stage production presented by Church Unlimited last week, highlighted the many social and personal problems people face during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The production, Baggage, was a celebration of dance, live music, poetry and audiovisual elements.
Baggage was the brainchild of Eugenie Wait and Melissa du Preez, who wrote and directed the piece. They were looking to create something with an Easter theme for the church to perform with local actors and musicians.
It told the story of various people arriving at the airport, each one carrying their own baggage. Video inserts were filmed at KMI Airport to give it a local, authentic feel. Each character had a different sort of burden they dragged along, ranging from rejection and fear to violence and greed.
Their experiences were thoughtfully portrayed by live dance, music and contemporary music video productions, intertwined with a video narrator who gave biblical perspective to what the characters portrayed.
The end is a beautiful climax of how each character finds peace and rest after being able to leave their baggage behind.
