Galaxy miss out on top 8

Mpumalanga’s only representatives in the DStv Premiership, TS Galaxy, missed out on a top-eight spot after going down 1-0 to Kaizer Chiefs at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday. Coming to this game, Galaxy, who were already eighth on the table with 36 points, only needed one point to qualify for that top-eight finish, but missed out after the loss.

Kaizer Chiefs were on position ten with 33 points and this win took them to 36 points, equal to Galaxy, but the Soweto giants managed the top-eight spot on goal difference.

They finished this season in position eight and have qualified for the MTN8 competition when the new season resumes. Even though the home team did not get to finish the season in the topeight, coach Owen Da Gama praised his boys for a job well done and said they would try again in the new season.

“Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be, but the boys fought gallantly. We will give it a try once again next season,” he said.

“All I can say is that I am so proud of these boys. Some of them were playing in the top flight for the first time, and to play against teams such as Orlando Pirates, to go to Stellenbosch, who are fighting for their lives, and come back here is difficult for a team still trying to find its feet in the premier division.”

Da Gama said it was an extremely tough season for them, especially playing with young players. “It’s the first season and I came in a bit late. But I can see foundations that have been built. A lot of good structures have been put into place. We have learned a lot.
