MBOMBELA - A Hoërskool Nelspruit learner is in Mediclinic Nelspruit’s ICU after being knocked off his scooter in an accident on

July 21.

Johvan de Lange (18) was on his way to school when the incident, involving a small bakkie, occurred on the corner of Van der Merwe and Ferreira streets.

Johvan’s father, Hennie, told Lowvelder that his son was in a coma, but in a stable condition.

He did, however, confirm that

Johvan suffered multiple injuries in the accident.

He fractured his femur, tibia and fibia in his right leg, broke his collarbone in three places on his left side, and also has a fracture in his left leg.

“A vertebra in both his neck and back was also injured, but we are not too worried about that. He was wearing a helmet, so he did not hurt his head,” said Hennie.

Initially, Johvan was in the high care unit and still talking to his family, but this changed on Friday morning, his dad said.

The major concern at this stage, and what is keeping him under sedation, is a fat embolism in his brain. This is when a piece of intravascular fat lodges within a blood vessel, and is common after fractures.

Hennie said the doctors are carefully monitoring him, ensuring that he remains calm. They have not repaired any of the fractures yet as they are waiting for him to become a bit stronger before subjecting him to surgery.

“Everyone is praying and we believe and trust that the doctors are going to get him back to health. Thank you to every person who is praying.”

He said it is incredible to witness how wonderful people have been these last few days. “It is not easy, but he has so many friends, and you do not realise the impact your child has on others’ lives until a moment like this.”

He expressed his deepest gratitude for the support they have received thus far.

The Lowveld Motorcycle Safety Initiative (LMSI), of which Hennie is a member, said it took note of the accident. Its chairperson, Johan du Plessis, urged motorists to be on the lookout for motorcycle riders in the city, because more and more people are driving them due to the increase in fuel prices.

“A bike’s profile is less visible. For that reason, motorists need to actively keep an eye out for them. Think twice before you cross an intersection, or turn right over an oncoming traffic lane - look twice for bikes!”

At the same time, he reminded motorcyclists of the dangers of riding bikes. “Be on the lookout, specifically during peak-time traffic. Adjust your speed according to the traffic and road conditions, identify threats, evaluate risks, and be ready to apply preventative actions. Also remember to wear protective gear at all times, including a helmet, jacket, gloves, riding boots and appropriate pants ATGATT - All The Gear, All The Time.”

Emer-G-Med, which was the emergency services on the scene of the accident, said it was unclear who was at fault.
