Local resident takes the initiative to clean up around White River Post Office

- Tumelo Waga Dibakwane

After a member of the community lent the White River Rugby Club the money for Marcelino Marais’ recent jaw surgery, the club is now hard at work to raise the necessary funds to repay this favour.

One of the most recent initiatives was a colour run, organised by the White River Old Boys, hosted at the club on July 23. Loads of colourful fun was had at the event. Chris Crous confirmed that they managed to raise about R12 000 that day.

He mentioned more projects in the pipeline, including a spring bash and a golf day. The dates for these have yet to be announced.

A resident, Dimitri Coetser, has cleaned up the White River Post Office and installed more rubbish bins outside to keep the area clean.

Coetser said the post office area had remained filthy for many years, and the people who are responsible for cleaning it, did not manage. With the help of The Power of 8000 organisation, the situation has now drastically improved.

“I grew up in in this area, and seeing the post office area being filthy did not sit well with me. I decided to take the initiative and clean it using my own resources.

The problem in the area was not only the garbage, the floor needed proper cleaning, too. So I prioritised the floor and also removed some of the grass and growth sprouting up,” he said.

Coetser said he believes that with the additional bins, the public area will be better kept clean. “A lot of people are using the post office daily. The safety and health of the staff working in that post office made the cleaning necessary, too. Now I am happy that the place looks new. My wish is that it must remain like that every day, because my aim is to see my town being clean always,” said Coetser.

He said his mission is to clean up the entire town, but with limited resources, it is difficult, as he is not receiving any funding, although he has already cleaned up some other parts. “I am calling on business people and residents in the area to assist where they can, so I can clean more areas. People do want to stay in an area that is clean, but it costs a lot when you do not have a source of funding. If the community can band together, we can do more to keep our area clean, and that will keep the value of our properties high,” Coetser concluded.
