John Mdluli adopts good values

- Bongekile Khumalo

MATSAFENI - All colourful and bright was the order of the day as the learners and teachers of John Mdluli Primary School launched their seven values that the school had adopted to enhance the discipline of the children.

The launch of the values, which are kindness, self-esteem, respect, trustworthy, responsibility, positivity and love, took place on Friday

July 29.

The school’s hall was filled with excited and energetic learners from all grades, most of whom performed plays, dance routines, sang and recited poems along the theme of the values.

The school’s principal, Stanley Charles, said the adoption of the values will help the learners and teachers to improve discipline and ethical behaviour, and shape future leaders.

“We visited some schools in Cape Town a while ago and we saw the magnificent impact that the values had on the disciplined character of the children. Such schools are already at advanced stages of the adoption, but we will also get there,” he said in his opening speech.

Charles said, “Though it may seem like a small step, it is a step into the right direction. We hope that parents will show their support in instilling the values even at home.”

A teacher and the event organiser, Pauline Thwala, said the school is aiming to produce great-quality citizens.

“We want to overcome all the negativity and social ills that influence the behaviour of our learners. We want to teach them to identify and focus on positive aspects of life. Teachers, doctors, both male and female leaders must come from this school,” she said.

Another aim is to encourage other schools in the area to adopt the key values. “We believe that our school will be one of the best in town as a result of the adoption of these values. These are not just words that we are spreading, but it must be a lifestyle for the whole community of Matsafeni,” Thwala said.

The values, painted on planks, have been posted around the school grounds. Charles thanked the local BUCO branch for sponsoring all the equipment needed for the long-term campaign and the local artist, Wouter de Witt, who painted the school.

Charles also thanked the support the school has received from the school governing body, parents and stakeholders that continue to engage in elevating Matsafeni.
