No arrests yet after shop owner is killed

MBOMBELA - The Mbombela police are investigat­ing a murder and business robbery case with regard to an incident that occurred at the Koenic Dunlop Zone Nelspruit on the Old Pretoria Road on August 5.

According to the police, it was reported that the shop owner, Riaan van der Sandt, and his staff were about to close the shop, when a group of about nine suspects entered the building.

‘The suspects shot the shop owner during the process of the robbery and he died on the scene’

“The suspects threatened the shop owner and his employees with firearms. They assaulted one of the staff and demanded that he show them where the safe was, and took an undisclose­d amount of cash. The suspects then shot the shop owner during the process of the robbery and he died on the scene.”

Hi-Tech’s Michiel van de Venter was on the scene first after the security company had been notified of the incident.

He said the paramedics arrived shortly after he did and certified Van der Sandt dead on the scene.

Van der Sandt’s funeral will be held at the AGS Communio Church on Saturday.
