- Mark Kinnear

Just over 1 000 Lowvelders took part in the SPAR Women's Virtual Challenge on Saturday.

The event was held countrywide and SPAR encouraged women (and men) to run a route and distance of their choice between 06:00 and 18:00 that day.

The Lowveld events were held at Naas SUPERSPAR, Halls parkrun, Eagle's View Park, The Grove SUPERSPAR, Komatipoort SUPERSPAR (at Kambaku), Crossing SUPERSPAR and at Hilltop Pass. "A huge thank you to all our SPAR Lowveld retailers, SPAR Virtual Race ambassadors, Lowveld Media and the SPAR Lowveld DC team for supporting the cause and giving back to our communities," said Wilma Mahne, the divisional managing director of SPAR Lowveld.

“'I Rise' is an invitation to all women to find and live their confidence. To take a stand and claim their place in every sphere of life, whether at home, in their communities or at their workplace. We should rise and claim our right to be safe - financially, emotionally and physically. Gender-based violence is the scourge of our society and we should all get actively involved to put a stop to it,” she said.
