Mbombela’s Daredevils run for cancer awareness

- Ian Hugh Fleming

MBOMBELA - Some of the Lowveld’s best and bravest boys and men donned their purple Daredevil Speedos on Friday to help run testicular and prostate cancer out of town.

Sponsored by the Hollard Group and organised by Lowveld Daredevil coordinator, Ista van Zyl, and White River’s Legogote Marathon Club, the 5km run promoted cancer awareness with slogans like “Boardshorts are for sissies” and “Çancer Yek’ Umshini Wami” (cancer, leave my private parts).

The Airlink Pumas showed their true colours by supporting the event once again, and were joined by the Legogote runners, as guys of all shapes, sizes and ages took to the Eagle’s View running course on a sweltering afternoon.

Pumas star winger Jade Stiglingh said, “We’re here to raise awareness among men that testicular and prostate cancer can be beaten. It’s important for guys to get tested.”

Van Zyl said, “Just about everyone knows someone who has had cancer or is still battling it, and we are very grateful to the public who showed their support by attending these awareness and education events.”

Andre Vianello, chairperson of Legogote Villagers, encouraged adult men to get tested. “Guys, take care of your health and you can lead a long and happy life,” he said.

Van Zyl said the event was a great success.

“Hollard’s national awareness and outreach programme supports CANSA’s aim, which encourages guys to lead a balanced and healthy lifestyle, to go for regular screening, and to know their own body and family medical history.”

All proceeds from the Daredevil Run go to CANSA and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of South Africa.
