Lowveld golfers compete in interprovincials
The Lowveld had a very strong contingency in the Mpumalanga team at the recently held 2022 GolfRSA Mid-Amateur Interprovincial Tournament at Devonvale, outside Stellenbosch.
From October 10 to 14, the country’s best amateurs, 30 years and older, represented their province with pride and gusto, and some remarkable golf was played.
Matches were close, and despite only winning one against Boland, the Mpumalanga side pushed their rivals all the way, with close margins of defeat in the last three days.
The players who carried the torch for Lowveld were Jan Combrink (Malelane, team captain), Jaco van der Watt and
Ruan van Blerk (White River), Stephan Potgieter (Mbombela), and Johan Prinsloo (Kambaku).
Van der Watt ended the week as the joint most valuable player of Mpumalanga with six points out of a possible 10, a distinction which he shared with Bethal’s Vusi Zungu. It meant they were also joint 14th overall as the most valuable player of the tournament in the B-section, out of 49 participants.
Despite the defeat, the team was a close-knit unit throughout the tournament, and prospects for future success looms large if most of the team remains together. Lowveld can be proud indeed of the quality golfers they deliver year after year, in talent and spirit.
