TOPS at SPAR Lowveld Oktoberfest draws crowd

- Ian Hugh Fleming

MBOMBELA - On Saturday, a packed TOPS at SPAR Lowveld Oktoberfest at the Mbombela Stadium’s The Shed heard the chant “Ein prosit,

ein prosit, de gemütlichkeit!” (a toast, a toast, good cheer!), prompting revelries long into the night.

In true Bavarian style, the Sousaphonics Oompah Band raised the large crowd’s spirits while beer on tap flowed and the revellers enjoyed German specialities like mouthwatering eisbein and various others.

Craft beer from the Sabie Brewery and Hops Hollow complemented local music artists Just Sam and Danny Fisher, while Voxy the lime-green panther ensured there was not a dull moment for kids and adults alike.

The Oktoberfest’s chairperson, Johan Heine, said, “We wanted to bring a festival to the Lowveld people that they would remember for a long time to come, but most importantly, to give some exposure to businesses recovering from the Covid pandemic.”

TOPS at SPAR congratulated the festival’s winners, Kobus and Lizelle van der Walt, who scooped up the Nevills Best Dressed Award and prizes to the value of R6 000.

A special toast goes to the Lowvelders who came out in their hundreds to bring this centuries-old German tradition to life in Mbombela once again -

‘We wanted to bring a festival to the Lowveld people that they would remember for a long time to come’
