Entrepreneur of the Week
A simple search for some form of blue wall art got Vicky Human into a small business of her own.
"I love the colour blue and was searching the internet for blue wall art. This is where I found cyanotype prints."
After a bit of researching, she decided to order the solution and paper needed to make this form of art, and now she frequently visits markets, selling her beautifully blue art.
At first, she explained, the printing was purely a creative outlet, as many entrepreneurial ventures start out. "Over time, however, I started selling some of it." She works mainly from home in a cosy little "studio" space, which gives her the creative freedom she needs. Having a toddler and their second baby on the way, this fits well into her schedule.
Being originally from Mbombela has its benefits for this hobby-turned-business, as she draws most of her inspiration from nature - of which the Lowveld has no shortage.
"It is such a blessing to be born and bred in Mbombela.
"To make a cyanotype print, I use two iron compounds (ferric amonium and potassium ferricyanide) and watercolour paper."
With these components and her choice of leaves, flowers and more, the process of creating starts and ends in something arty and blue you will likely want in your home. As far as the profits go, it is not going towards anything specific yet other than buying more supplies.
And she says she cannot invest her profits in those extra supplies without the support of the community.
"It’s always lovely to get positive feedback from the community when exhibiting at markets and fairs. It gives me an idea of what the customer wants and likes."
