MBOMBELA - The state successfully opposed a bail application in the case against the alleged German tourist murderer, Joseph Nyalunga, during his third appearance in the KaBokweni Magistrate’s Court on November 7.

The provincial National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa, said Nyalunga had appeared for his formal bail application. “The court felt that the accused had failed to prove there are exceptional circumstances, which would have permitted his release on bail. The matter was remanded to January 24 for further investigation. The accused will remain in police custody,” she said.

Nyalunga was arrested on October 12 in connection with the killing of the German tourist, Jörg Schnarr. He is facing charges of murder, attempted murder and attempted hijacking. Schnarr was fatally shot while travelling on the Numbi road near the

Numbi Gate on Monday October 3.

“On the day of the attack, it was reported that four tourists from Germany were allegedly travelling in a Hyundai Staria on the Numbi road en route to the Mdluli Safari Lodge near the Numbi Gate. They were stopped by three armed suspects who were driving in a VW Caddy,” said Nyuswa.

The suspects are said to have instructed the tourists to open the doors of their vehicle, but when Schnarr reportedly locked all of them, one of the suspects allegedly shot him through the window, and hit his upper body.

“It is further said the victim’s vehicle drove in reverse for about 100m before crashing into the wall of Heroes Academy.

The driver died on the scene as a result of the shooting. The suspects reportedly sped off in their vehicle without taking anything from the tourists,” Nyuswa said.
