Dasha Foundation hosts Elvis Blue for a good cause

- Ian Hugh Fleming

MBOMBELA - The Dasha Foundation’s fundraiser with Elvis Blue at Church Unlimited on Saturday was a resounding success, with the school raising nearly R30 000 and all the kids having the time of their lives.

Dasha principal Shirley Parson said, “We had such a lot of fun, but these disabled kids are always fun. They have a lot to teach fully abled adults as they are far more accepting of life and other people than we are. It’s a huge privilege working with them.”

Elvis Blue played a selection of his older favourites like ‘Hemel Weet’ as well as new releases such as ‘Meer as Genoeg’.

Event organiser Andria Hattingh thanked the sponsors for the concert and made special mention of Henri Pieters of Stabilis, Martyn van Beek of power automation specialists Electro Systems, Ida and Jaco van Wyk of Power Pro, Crossing SUPERSPAR, AVS Hire and Unity Technologies, and Church Unlimited that gave the venue for free.

Parson said, “As a non-profit organisation, we rely on our sponsors, donations and volunteers to keep the school and our staff of 11 going. Events like the Elvis Blue concert are vital to our survival.”

She thanked the foundation’s enduring, long-term sponsors, Joubert and Sons, Macrovest, Nelspruit Iron and Steel Works, De Goede Finance, Nashua, as well as all others throughout the school’s 27-year history.

At present, the school offers three learning facilities: a stimulation centre for seriously disabled children, an educational school for kids who can receive teaching according to their abilities, and a protective workshop where children receive training and produce saleable goods.

The public is invited to the Dasha

Foundation where beautiful, handmade arts and crafts by the children are available for purchase. If you are short of Christmas gifts, pop along to 9 De Kock Street to buy some of their stunning mosaics, paintings, beadwork, pottery and sewing work.

“Children receive 30% of all sales, and you’ll never believe how happy this makes them. You have to see the joy that happens when the kids have made a sale,” said Parson.

The renowned Anton and Hanlie Bosch.

WHITE RIVER - Renowned for their beautiful and masterfully created ceramics, Lowveld husband and wife Anton and Hanlie Bosch, recently launched their new exhibition, ‘The Wonder of Clay’ - and what a wonder it was.

The exhibition is currently on at the White River Art Gallery and will continue until December 7.

Speaking to Lowvelder, Anton said it took him and his wife around a year to compile all the pieces that are on display in the gallery.

Some of them weigh up to 80kg while other special techniques have been used to create the most magical designs. Anton said the inspiration for the pieces comes from the couple’s immediate surroundings such as their garden and the several owls that frequent it.

“The turnout to the opening was fantastic and everyone was very kind. I felt people really appreciated the exhibition,” he said.

People are encouraged to view the exhibition before it ends in a week’s time in order to fully appreciate and enjoy the wide range of creations.
